Why Students Choose Canada
Canada is a popular destination for Indian students. It has a strong education system, a large Indian student community, tuition that costs less than the US, and good post-graduation work options that can lead to permanent residency. Financing a Canadian education still takes planning, especially because of the specific financial rules set by the Canadian government.

Funding Tuition and Living Expenses
When you calculate how much funding you need for Canada, there are 2 main costs to plan for: tuition and living expenses.
Canada has a specific way of showing you can cover living expenses, called the Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). To apply under the Student Direct Stream (SDS), you need to deposit a set amount, currently CAD 20,635, into a designated Canadian bank account. This shows immigration officials that you can support yourself in your first year. Your loan needs to cover both your first year's tuition and this GIC deposit.
Popular Programs Funded by Education Loans
Indian students mostly apply for loans for 2 types of Canadian programs.
- Master's programs (MS, MA, MBA): Traditional university degrees. Lenders prefer these, especially STEM programs, because graduates find jobs easily. Non-collateral loans are easier to get for these programs.
- Post-graduate (PG) diplomas: Offered by Canadian colleges, these 1 to 2 year programs focus on practical, job-ready skills. NBFCs are the main providers of non-collateral loans for PG diplomas.
What Lenders Look At For Canada
Lenders check a few things when reviewing your application for Canada.
- Institution type: Lenders rank approved Canadian institutions by risk. Universities are usually considered lower risk than colleges.
- Academic record: A steady academic record with no failed subjects is preferred.
- Co-applicant's profile: Your co-applicant's financial health matters most. A good credit score, stable income, and low existing debt all help.
