Why Students Choose Germany

Germany is known worldwide for engineering, automotive design, and technology. For Indian students, it's an attractive choice because most public universities charge little to no tuition. Getting a student visa still means proving you have enough money to live in Germany. A loan built for Germany's requirements can help you meet these rules without using up your family's savings.

Tuition Versus Living Costs

Studying in Germany works differently than the US or UK.

Tuition fees: Most public universities in Germany are funded by the state and don't charge tuition for Bachelor's or Master's programs, no matter your nationality. You'll only pay a small "semester contribution," usually €150 to €300, which covers admin costs and often includes a public transport ticket. Private universities do charge tuition, and it can be significant.

Living costs: Education may be free, but living in Germany isn't. Rent, health insurance, food, and study materials make up your main expenses. The German government requires international students to show they have enough money to support themselves for at least their first year.

The Blocked Account Requirement

The most important financial step for a German student visa is opening a Sperrkonto, or blocked account.

To get your visa, you need to deposit a legally required minimum amount into this account, currently €11,208 per year, or €934 per month. The money is "blocked," so you can only withdraw the monthly allowance once you're in Germany. Your loan needs to transfer this exact amount in euros to your blocked account provider, such as Expatrio, Fintiba, or Coracle. GradsLoan works with lenders who handle this foreign exchange transfer, so your funds reach Germany securely and in time for your visa appointment.

Funding Your Living Expenses

Since a loan for Germany mainly funds your blocked account and covers costs like health insurance and travel, the total amount you need is usually lower than for destinations like the US or Australia, often around ₹10L to ₹15L for a 2-year Master's at a public university.
